An artisan is considered an artist but are you aware that jewelry making is a form of art just like painting, sculpting and glass working? Artists that use fine metals and precious stones to make body decorations have been around for hundreds of years. They have crafted such items as bracelets, rings, neck collars and arm bands for royalty and the wealthy.
In biblical days only the wealthy or royalty was able to afford to have an artisan design and make their body decorations. Occasionally when the piece was no longer a desirable item, they would be handed down to the most trusted and loyal servant. It was actually a sign of endearment from the family to the servant.
In the beginning the artisan concerned himself with specific designs that told of the family for whom he was creating the body decorations. Each piece told a story of the family or the individual for whom it was designed. Today attention is being paid to designs for their artistic value instead. What once was a symbol of wealth is now a testimony to the wearers likes.
Artisans used different materials to craft their pieces. Many times they only had native materials to use such as shells, bone and carved stones like marble. Precious stones and fine metals were not actually used until much later and then only for royalty. The more difficult the materials were to obtain, the more expensive and precious they were.
There is two categories of stones used by jewelers today; semi-precious and precious. As with stones in the beginning, the more difficult they are to come by the more precious they are. Many gemstones as well as quartz and coral are considered in the first category while the latter includes diamonds, rubies and other stones that must be mined. Pearls are considered to be precious stones although they are not stones at all.
There are also a large array of metals used by jewelers. Fine metals are gold or silver which are the most commonly used. The purity of each metal regulates the value of the piece. A piece that is the most pure will naturally cost more to make and to purchase. Silver is usually combined with other metals for its purity, the purest of which is . 925. Gold is rated according to how much is actually used with other metals to create a piece. This rating is called karats.
If you think that this type of art was only used to decorate the body of those it was designed for, you would be wrong. Many artisans made small baubles to use as money. They would pay their taxes with these as well as purchase homes and life necessities. In some ways it is still that way today. The US uses gold as a form of currency.
The art of jewelry making has long been popular with different cultures. It has been used as money and to decorate the wealthy of a culture. The differences in materials determine the value of each piece.

Perfume has been with us for a very long time indeed and is one of the original accessories to a woman's (or mans) dressing table. The oldest evidence of any fragrance making was way back in ancient Mesopotamia and in ancient Egypt. These were the first to make stills that were for the sole purpose of manufacturing fragrances in large amounts.
To this day, little has changed in terms of what the actual ingredients are. The main source for an attractive odor is still flowers which are sometimes blended to give a number of different varieties. When more than one flower is used it's known as a floral bouquet just like when they are display flowers.
There are of course exceptions to the rule and there are some products that are some 'single floral' scents available. There are also some synthetic products available but the blends are by far the most popular of the lot. There are literally millions spent every year in researching the best of these blends. The big companies are always looking to get them to market in the best way possible.
The last few years has been the era of the pop star in the scent business. Celebrity fragrances have become massive but can you seriously picture the next 'gangster rapper' with a laboratory overall and a pair of protective goggles?
